According to some estimates, there are more than 1,000 breeds of livestock sheep worldwide. In the European Union, Romania is one of the largest exporters of livestock, with the highest increase in sheep flocks. More precisely, Romania has more than 9,8 million heads of ewes, currently holding 3rd place in Europe after Great Britain and Spain.
The first most important sheep breed in Romania is Tsurcana – also called “The Queen of the Mountains” – with 69.9 % of all sheep, followed by the Tsigai breed, the second most important sheep breed from this country, with 24.3% of all sheep. Obviously, selling livestock sheep has a special contribution to the economic development of the country.
Romania is a country with a favorable environment including pasturing fields and beautiful hills for the lambs and sheep. About 20% of the country’s land areas and about 30% of Romanian agricultural areas are covered by permanent pasture. And as we said, one of the most popular breeds which are available for sale is Tsurcana. Also, there are other breeds raised in good conditions that can be exported from this country such as Tsigai and even Karakul sheep.
More than that, due to favorable geographic positioning, close to Central Europe and with access to the Black Sea, the Romanian sheep breeders consistently exports livestock in Europe, and, via sea routes to the Mediterranean region, in North Africa, on Eastern Mediterranean coast and in some countries from Arab Peninsula like Israel and Lebanon.
